How Road Salt Use Is Changing in New York
Across the region, municipalities and the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) have been updating their winter road maintenance practices to reduce salt use without compromising safety. NYSDOT now uses equipment that monitors road temperature and conditions in real time, along with, brining technology, which applies a liquid salt solution that adheres to pavement and requires significantly less salt, that use calibrated spreaders to ensure precise application instead of over-salting These modern tools reduce the amount of chloride entering streams and stormwater systems, which eventually discharge into Saratoga Lake. Municipalities around the lake are taking similar steps to continually improve winter road management.

Did you know at the Saratoga Lake Boat launch, there is a boat wash station with trained Lake Stewards on-site? This makes it easy for boaters to prevent and transport aquatic invasive species, which is illegal under the jurisdiction of the NYSDEC.
STOP BY FOR YOUR BOAT WASH AT NO COST AND HELP STOP THE SPREAD.
- CLEAN – Remove all visible plants, animals, dirt from boats, trailers, and gear. This can be done by hand but, better yet, at the boat wash station.
- DRAIN – Empty all water from your bilge, live wells, bait buckets, and any other containers.
- DRY – Allow boat, trailer, and any gear to thoroughly dry before moving to another body of water.
- DISPOSE – Of all plant material and unused bait properly in trash receptacles.
